Heart attack and stroke UK studies show that smokers in their 30s and 40s are five times more likely to have a heart attack than non-smokers. Tobacco contributes to the hardening of the arteries, which can then become blocked and starve the heart of bloodflow, causing the attack. Often, smokers who develop this will require complex and risky heart bypass surgery. If you smoke for a lifetime, there is a 50% chance that your eventual death will be smoking-related - half of all these deaths will be in middle age. Smoking also increases the risk of having a stroke. Lung problems Another primary health risk associated with smoking are lung cancer, which kills more than 20,000 people in the UK every year. US studies have shown that men who smoke increase their chances of dying from the disease by more than 22 times. Women who smoke increase this risk by nearly 12 times. Lung cancer is a difficult cancer to treat - long term survival rates are poor.
Smoking also increases the risk of oral, uterine, liver, kidney, bladder, stomach, and cervical cancers, and leukaemia. Another health problem associated with tobacco is emphysema, which, when combined with chronic bronchitis, produces chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The lung damage which causes emphysema is irreversible, and makes it extremely difficult to breathe. Harm to children Smoking in pregnancy greatly increases the risk of miscarriage, is associated with lower birthweight babies, and inhibited child development. Smoking by parents following the birth is linked to sudden infant death syndrome, or cot death, and higher rates of infant respiratory illness, such as bronchitis, colds, and pneumonia.
Nicotine, an ingredient of tobacco, is listed as an addictive substance by the US authorities. Although the health risks of smoking are culmulative, giving up can yield health benefits regardless of the age of the patient, or the length of time they have been smoking.

My name is Dongqi Yang from china, I am horror to be here today and I am very happy to receive this award. As you can imagine, as international students in Australia, the biggest challenge is English, I remembered that when I come here first time, there is a party in the house of my home stay. During the time, they played jokes and they laughed all the time, do you know how embarrassed that is, everyone laughed except you. So I pretend to understand the joke in another party, I saw everyone laugh and I laugh too in 5 seconds later. My home stay was surprised about that and asked me “do you understand?”， and I answered “no”， “So why do you laugh?” ”because I do not want to be embarrassed”!
But as I receive this award today, I want to thank to them, because they encourage me to be involved with the committee rather than staying in at home, play computer and speak Chinese. When I came to Wantirna College first time, I met liz collar who is international student coordinator. She is very kind to me, and she encourage me join SRC, I went to SRC meetings regularly all the time, but I didn’t even know what SRC was! That is the reason why I told her, I don’t want to go to SRC anymore. But she said “why not? You should go and you have to go!”I asked” why?” she said:” because I said so!”
But as ii receive this award today, I want to thank her. She helps me a lot. Truth be told, I am not the best student in Wantirna College, but I appreciate this award and I will try my best in future. I think I got 10 seconds left, I want to thank to Les and Vera who is my lovely home stay, thanks to Liz collar who is international student coordinator, I strongly want to thank to my mother, because she support me and gave me the opportunity to come to Australia. I have had a lot of teachers in my school who have given me much help in my study. For their help I will never forget them. But today I am going to talk about a special teacher of mine.
This teacher is not a human being and its name is“Computer”. It has been teaching me a lot of knowledge and I appreciate it very much.
With the development of modern science and technology, computers are widely used in every teritories [every field] including education. How can a computer be my teacher? How does a computer teach me? Multimedia(多媒体)helps a lot in this aspect in recent years, and computer-based training (CBT) has become a popular educational medium (手段).
Even before the multimedia come [came] up, many different learning systems appeared, using the components and techniques we now associate with the term “multimedia”.
Multimedia components, such as graphics (动画) , animations , sound and video, make the learning process easier through visualization. Animations can present many complex subjects dynamically, but human teachers can not do this on blackboards. Multimedia makes our study more lively and interesting.
For example, a CD-ROM disk named “Encarta Encyclopedia” contains 650 MB information including images, graphics, music clips, video clips, animations , texts, hotwords, and database search functions. Fields involved includes physical sciences, performance arts, social sciences, politics, military, education and so on. When pressing a button, I can hear American President Clinton's speech clip.
I may enjoy playing all kinds of musical instruments in the world. I can also see the animation of many physical phenomena. This makes physical concept to be understood deeply [ concepts understood better]. The audio features of multimedia can greatly help me learning [learn] foreign languages. With its speech output capabilities, I'm no longer dependent on an instructor for proper pronunciation.
How can I interact with a computer? There are many ways, including keyboard, mouse pointer, and touch screen. I often use a keyboard.
When I press right keys, I can see and hear whatever I want. Information world is at my fingertip. I wish that true speech input-output system would be invented one day.
As teachers, computers have a lot of virtues：They are positive, they have good memories and never lose any information stored in them.
They have much knowledge in every field. They can let out all kinds of sounds, and can also improve the efficiency of our study. For example, if I want to, I can skip some chapters so that I can study at my own pace.
Although computers will never take the place of human teachers, they are welcomed by more and more learners. Computers will continue to evolve(发展)with the aid of modern technologies.

At the same time, english may be the most important factor in deciding which countries are leaders in the future. the language of the most advanced management and technology is undoubtedly english. Being able to absorb this information is really the key to the new century.In the 21century. We can’t go there and speak our own language because nobody is going to learn it in order to understand us. our asian rival, india, has surged ahead of other developing countries in information technology because of its superior english skills. Unless we are able to master english, we will not be able to get our population to use it and take advantage of the new economy.There is an urgent need to have a workforce which is proficient in the language in view of the information technology onslaught.
Second, about learning english, i think laying a strong foundation is the first and most important step. In other words, you should read and speak english every day. Memorizing new words and phrases is also helpful.Of course, learning english takes some time, so don’t be impatient. Remember, rome wasn’t built in a day. And then since english is not our native tongue, we must develop the muscles of your speech organs to produce unfamiliar sounds.When you read, read as loudly as possible, as clearly as possible and as quickly as possible. tongue muscles’ Training is of importance in learning any foreign language.
Third, if you want to speak good english, please don’t care how poorly well you speak, only care about catching the chances to speak. I have made a considerable amounts of public english speaking in my life, i am often asked why the crazy english method is better than other methods or if the crazy english method will help all english learners. My answer is, the method will help the english learners because it is a perfect match with the chinese principles of diligence, self-help and determination. mere exposure to english will not enable you to speak english. if you want to drive you have to get in the car and drive, if you want to dance you have to turn on the music and dance, if you want to swim you have to jump in the water and swim.In fact, swimming is the perfect comparison to learning english. You can’t learn to swim by sitting in a room and reading books about swimming skills.In order to be a swimmer you’ve got to conquer you fear, you’ve got to survive and suck in water, yell for help, you’ve got to lose face many times before you can make it. But, to be a good swimmer you’ve got to practice again and again. To be a great swimmer you have to practice for years until you can harmonize every part of your body and mind.
Finally, i want to greet you and encourage you to seize this unique opportunity to conquer english and make lifelong friends from all over our college. As you know, we are human beings ,not animals. We know what we want to do. We know our destiny is in our hands. We have not as yet begun discussing the basic demands of the struggle. I wish to stress that I myself have at no time entered into negotiations about the future of our country except to insist on a meeting between the ANC and the has gone further than any other Nationalist President in taking real steps to normalize the situation. It is our belief that the future of our country can only be determined by a body which is democratically elected on a non瞨acial basis. Negotiations on the dismantling of apartheid will have to address the overwhelming demands of our people for a democratic, non瞨acial and unitary South Africa. And this reality is that we are still suffering under the policies of the Nationalist , so that the process towards democracy is rapid and uninterrupted. We have waited too long for our freedom. We can no longer wait.
Now is the time to intensify the struggle on all fronts. To relax our efforts now would be a mistake which generations to come will not be able to role in a united democratic and non瞨acial South Africa is the only way to peace and racial harmony. In conclusion, I wish to quote my own words during my trial in 20xx. They are as true today as they were then. I spoke: I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and — and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. after seeing the video, you may think this novel is frightening. i want to say ‘no, it’s not a horror fiction’. the novel tells about the thoughts of a murdered girl called susie after she was dead. she cannot forget her families and her lover .she stays in her own perfect world, watching their life. however, if the dead don’t forget the alive or don’t leave them for the heaven, people who are alive will not forget the sadness and cannot be cured by time.
somebody may think it’s a story about justice. but i want to say :’ no.’ at the end of the story , susie was able to come back to stay a few minutes with her boy .the last thing she want is only a kiss. she didn’t care about the punishment of the murder and just wish people all a long and happy life. that is what the novel wants to told us: love is always more important than hate. and ‘a family ,is like the bones all over one’s body .even though one piece breaks down and the others may feel sorry about it for some time , the dead are gone and the life is to be continued .
